November 2022 - Listening, Learning, Loving, Hating

WHAT I’M LISTENING TO: I’ve been listening to a mix of audiobooks and podcasts on my morning walks/gym workouts for a while now and it’s a great way to stay interested in the content while you’re doing things that aren’t especially entertaining. I just finished listening to Dave Grohl’s memoir Storyteller. If you’re a fan of his, or a fan of memoirs or rock memoirs specifically, you’ll really enjoy this book. The best part is that Dave narrates the story, which gave the story an even more personal touch. Obviously, you’ll want to follow up by listening to the entire Foo Fighters catalog as well as all of the bands he mentions.

Like seemingly everyone else in the world, I’m also listening to Taylor Swift’s Midnights. Other albums I’ve been playing include Abhi the Nomad’s Abhi vs the Universe, Shovels & Rope’s O’ Be Joyful (10th Anniversary Edition), First Aid Kit’s Palomino, and Little Big Town’s Mr. Sun.

WHAT I’M LEARNING: So much! I (virtually) attended Squarespace’s Circle Day - a small conference for Circle members (if you’ve designed or own 3 or more Squarespace sites you’re automatically in!) that featured a lot of fellow copywriters, designers, entrepreneurs, developers, and more all coming together to talk and learn about the future of Squarespace, how to use their services to market your own, and a ton of different ways to do business with Squarespace. Clearly, I’m a big fan of the platform.

WHAT I’M LOVING: This is more fun to illustrate with a list:

  • Hockey season. (Even though my team isn't off to the best start)

  • Orange Theory Fitness. I’d been wanting to try it for years and finally did back in September. I love that I get a legitimate workout every time, that it’s only an hour, and that I can put in (or not) as much effort as I want.

  • I’ve been living in this Jenni Kayne cashmere cocoon cardigan.

  • Jen Wagner Co.’s fonts. I’ve been fangirling over these fonts for a solid week now.

WHAT I’M HATING: Text message marketing. I hate it. This is an incredible circle of irony for me as I started my career as a Mobile Marketing Tech enticing concert-goers to sign-up for text messages for the bands they were seeing. But THAT was a different time, people. It seems like everyone is jumping on the mobile marketing bandwagon (a late flex since that career starter I mentioned was 15 years ago), and it’s true, mobile marketing is a powerful engagement tool. Not with me. Don’t get me started with the political messages. You may think I’d allow some leeway when we’re on the same team, but no. I did not sign up for these. Leave me alone.
